SYMPTOMS

When you click the Open new side note icon in the notification area, a new side note window appears with the text from another open side note window and the new side note window is marked as read only and you cannot make any edits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when both the first side note window and the Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 window are minimized when you click the Open new side note icon in the notification area to create a new side note. This problem only occurs if you wait longer than the current timeout value to create a new side note.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods.

Method 1

Activate the original side note item.

Method 2

Increase the timeout value. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start OneNote 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the Category box, click Open and Save.
  4. Type a number that is higher than the current number in the Automatically release file locks after OneNote has been inactive for the following number of minutes box, and then click OK.

Important Do not click to clear the Automatically release file locks after OneNote has been inactive for the following number of minutes check box.

Method 3

Maximize the first side note window instead of creating a new side note window, and then click New page to create a new side note page.

MORE INFORMATION

OneNote 2003 locks section files so that they cannot be edited by more than one computer at the same time. By default, OneNote 2003 releases this lock after a certain period of time if you have not been working on a file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1.
