"Visual Basic Runtime" Error Message When You Start Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Word 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime Error 2147467259 {80004005} Automation Error

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the Hewlett-Packard Scan Picture utility is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Rename the Hpssp1wa.dot and Mwobmn97.dot files in the Office Startup folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Locate the Office Startup folder (typically found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup).
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

    On the View tab, click to clear the Hide extensions for know file types check box.
  3. Right-click the Hpssp1wa.dot file, and then click Rename.
  4. Type hpssp1wa.old, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click the Mwobmn97.dot file, and then click Rename.
  6. Type mwobmn97.old, and then press ENTER.

Method 2

Rename the HP Scan Picture document templates. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
  2. In the All or part of the file name box, type hp*.dot, and then click Search.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

    On the View tab, click to clear the Hide extensions for know file types check box.
  4. Right-click each file that is listed in the search results, and then click Rename.

    Change the extension for each file to .old, and then press ENTER.
