FIX: "SERVER_ERROR" error message when you query the Search service in SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you query the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Search service for specific content, you may receive unexpected search results. For example, you may find that no items are returned in the search results or that the SharePoint Portal Server Search service generates an error message that is similar to the following:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the content that is returned by SharePoint Portal Server 2003, such as the description of a document, contains one or more XML characters that are not recognized in the XML schema.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

This problem is corrected in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
