SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on a computer in a server cluster, the following event may be logged in the application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ClusSvc
Event Category: (2048)
Event ID: 1058
Computer: Computer Name
Description: The Cluster Resource Monitor could not load the DLL exres.dll for resource type Microsoft Exchange System Attendant.
Data: 0000: 7e 00 00 00 ~...

CAUSE

This problem may occur when an Exchange virtual server is already configured in the server cluster.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Exchange Server 2003 on additional nodes in the server cluster, the Exchange 2003 Setup program tries to modify properties on the existing Exchange virtual server resources. Because Exchange 2003 Setup has not yet completed, and because the Exres.dll resource DLL has not yet been registered, the attempt to update properties is not successful. Therefore, the event that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article is logged.
