Error Message: Microsoft Reader Is No Longer Able to Access the Book

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Reader 2.0, you may receive the following error message or an error message that is similar to the following:
Microsoft reader is no longer able to access the book.
When you click OK, you receive one of the following error messages:
MSREADER caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll at 015f:bff7b997.
The instruction at "0x0105f5cb" referenced memory at "0x00e34390". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
Note The memory location may vary.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • The Litpath.lpt annotation file (.ebo) or the My Library folder is set to read-only.
  • The Litpath.lpt file has been corrupted.
Note Books (.lit) can be read-only.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click My Documents.
  2. Right-click My Library, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click to clear the Read-only check box.
  4. Click OK, and then double-click My Library.
  5. If you cannot see the LitPath.lpt file, follow these steps:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    2. On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
    3. Click OK.
  6. Right-click the LitPath.lpt file, and then click Properties.
  7. On the General tab, click to clear the Read-only check box.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Double-click the Annotations folder.
  10. Repeat steps 6 through 8 for each annotation file.
If these steps do not resolve the behavior, delete the LitPath.lpt file. When Microsoft Reader starts it creates a new LitPath.lpt file if one is not present. Note You may have to download books again after you replace the LitPath.lpt file.
