WordArt gradient fill may print incorrectly in Publisher 2003

When you print a publication in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 or Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 that contains a WordArt object with a gradient fill, the fill may print incorrectly. Instead of the fill spanning all the letters in the WordArt object, the gradient fill may restart in each character of the WordArt object.

Note This problem does not affect WordArt objects where the axis of the gradient fill is aligned with the text baseline. For example, a WordArt object with horizontal text and a horizontal gradient fill will print correctly.

This problem may occur when you print the publication as Separations or as Composite Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black (CMYK).

To do this, in the Print dialog box, click Advanced Print Settings.

To work around this problem, export the WordArt object as a graphic file (picture), and then replace the WordArt object with the graphic file in your publication.

To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Export the WordArt object as a Windows Metafile (WMF)

Note Use this method to print to a PostScript Level 2 printer.

1. Right-click your WordArt object, and then click Save as Picture.
2. In the Save As dialog box, change the Save as type box to Windows Metafile (*.wmf). Type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.
   
   Note To make sure that the exported graphic is the same size as the original WordArt object, do not click Change to change the resolution from Desktop Printing (150 dpi). Because the Windows Metafile will be vector-based, this setting only affects how large the graphic will appear when you import it.
3. Right-click the WordArt object in your publication, and then click Delete Object.
4. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
5. Select the picture that you saved in step 2, and then click Insert.

Method 2: Export the WordArt object as Tagged Image File Format (TIFF)

Note Use this method to print to a PostScript Level 3 printer.

1. Right-click your WordArt object, and then click Save as Picture.
2. In the Save As dialog box, change the Save as type box to Tag Image File Format (*.tif).
3. Type a file name in the File name box.
4. Click Change.
5. In the Change Resolution dialog box, click Commercial Printing (300 dpi), and then click OK.
6. In the Save As dialog box, click Save.
7. Right-click the WordArt object in your publication, and then click Delete Object.
8. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
9. Select the picture that you saved in steps 2 through 6, and then click Insert.

The TIFF file that was created by Method 2 will contain an alpha channel. Publisher treats this alpha channel as a transparency mask. Because Publisher cannot print transparency masks to PostScript Level 2 printer drivers, you can only use this method if your PostScript driver supports PostScript Level 3. If your printer driver only supports PostScript Level 2, the TIFF will print with a solid color background.

Method 3: Publish file as PDF or XPS

Note This method is available only in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007. This method requires the use of a third-party product to print the file. For more information about how to create a PDF file in Publisher 2003, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

1. In Publisher 2007, click Publish as PDF or XPS on the File menu.
2. In the Save as type drop-down list, select PDF.
3. Click Desktop under Save in.
4. Change any other details as you want, and then click Publish.
5. Exit Publisher 2007.
6. On the Desktop, double-click the PDF file to open the file in a PDF program, and then print the file.

To insert a WordArt object in your Publisher publication, follow these steps:

1. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click WordArt.
   
   You should now see a WordArt toolbar.
2. On the WordArt toolbar, click Insert WordArt.
3. In the WordArt Gallery dialog box, select the WordArt style that you want, and then click OK.
4. In the Edit WordArt Text dialog box, type the text for your WordArt object, and then click OK.
