"System Files Update" message when you try to install Streets and Trips or MapPoint

When you try to install Microsoft Streets and Trips or Microsoft MapPoint, you receive a message that is similar to the following:

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions are true:

• The Microsoft Windows Installer has been damaged.
• There are software or hardware conflicts on your computer.
• The installation CD is damaged.

When this issue occurs, a Microsoft Office component (OSP) that you must have to update your system files is not successfully copied from your installation CD.

To resolve this issue, copy the OSP folder from your installation CD to your computer, install the OSP component, and then reinstall Streets and Trips or MapPoint. To do this, follow these steps.

Note For demonstration purposes, this article refers to the programs that this article applies to as "Streets and Trips". This article also applies to MapPoint.

Copy the OSP folder to your desktop

1. Insert your Streets and Trips installation CD in your computer's CD drive.
2. Click Start, click My Computer, right-click your CD drive, and then click Explore.
3. Right-click the \OSP folder, and then click Copy.
   
   This folder is located at the root of the CD in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2002. This folder is located inside the \Streets folder in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2003 and in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2004.
4. Minimize any open windows, right-click an empty area on your desktop, and then click Paste.

Install the OSP component

1. Double-click the OSP folder on your desktop, and then double-click the 1033 folder.
2. Double-click OSP.MSI (or OSP).
3. Restart your computer.

Rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program

If the problem is still not resolved, start your computer by using a clean boot procedure before you rerun the Setup program. For information about how to perform a clean boot, see the "More Information" section.

How to perform a clean boot

Start Microsoft Windows by loading a minimal set of drivers and services. This process, also known as a clean boot, provides as "clean" an installation environment as possible to reinstall Streets and Trips. To perform a clean boot, use the method below that is appropriate to your version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows XP

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows XP, follow these steps.

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
   
   The System Configuration Utility starts.
2. Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
   • Process System.ini file
   • Process Win.ini file
   • Load Startup Items
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program. After you rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program, to restore the computer to use a Normal startup, start the System Configuration Utility, click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, click OK, and then click Restart.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition (Me), follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
   
   The System Configuration Utility starts.
2. Click the General tab, and then click Selective startup.
3. Under Selective startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
   • Process Win.ini file
   • Load startup group items
   • Load environment variables
4. Click the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.
   
   When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
5. After the computer restarts, click Start, and then click Run.
6. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
7. Click the General tab, and then verify that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared.

If you see a selected, unavailable check box (it appears dimmed and has a check mark in it), the clean boot was not successful. If this problem occurs, you may have to obtain assistance from the manufacturer of the program that is listed next to the selected, unavailable check box.

Rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program. After you rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program, to restore the computer to use a Normal startup, start the System Configuration Utility, click the General tab, click Normal Startup, click OK, and then restart the computer.

Microsoft Windows 98

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows 98, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
   
   The System Configuration Utility starts.
2. Click the General tab, and then click Selective startup.
3. Under Selective startup, click to clear the following check boxes :
   • Process Config.sys file
   • Process Autoexec.bat file
   • Process Winstart.bat file (if it is available and not already cleared)
   • Load startup group items
4. Click the Win.ini tab, expand the [windows] folder, and then click to clear the load= check box and the run= check box.
5. Click OK, and then restart the computer.

Rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program. After you rerun the Streets and Trips Setup program, to restore the computer to use a Normal startup, start the System Configuration Utility, click the General tab, click Normal Startup, click OK, and then restart the computer.
