INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Outlook 2002 issues that are fixed in the Outlook 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package that is dated May 7, 2004.

Issues that are fixed by the hotfix package

The following issue is fixed in this hotfix package:
  • 822982 Outlook 2002 SP2 may appear to stop responding and the CPU usage may peak to 100 percent when you reply to an HTML e-mail message
The following issues are also fixed in this hotfix package, but they were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • If you add the PR_BODY property to an e-mail message and make a call to RTFSync on an OnRead event in a client extension, the body of the e-mail message may be blank.
  • If you create a custom form in Outlook 2002, and then type text in the Subject box, the Subject box text may be truncated to 256 characters.
  • If you cannot recover a deleted item that is in a public folder in Outlook 2002, the item may be lost.
  • If the following conditions are true when you run Outlook 2002
    • You run Outlook 2002 with the Outlook 2002 Connector and a Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) account in the same profile.
    • You address an e-mail message from the Lotus Notes address book, and then switch the account from where it will be sent to the POP3 account.
    the Lotus Notes address is not converted to Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) correctly, and you may receive a non-delivery report (NDR).
  • If you use the drag-and-drop operation to move an unread e-mail message in a new e-mail message, the unread e-mail message is marked as read.
  • If you address an e-mail message to a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) recipient in Outlook 2002 that includes an encryption certificate, and you select the option to encrypt the e-mail message, you receive the following error message when you send the e-mail message:
    Microsoft Outlook had problems encrypting this message because the following recipients had missing or invalid certificates, or conflicting or unsupported encryption capabilities
    Note This issue may occur when the LDAP recipient is also in a Global Address List and has an encryption certificate that is associated with the GAL.
  • When you create a rule with the Outlook Rules Wizard that uses the PRINT IT action to automatically print e-mail messages that are received, the received HTML e-mail messages may not print as expected.

    For example, the text is printed correctly in an HTML e-mail message, but images are not printed and HTML tables are not formatted.
  • If you replicate a child folder without replicating the parent folder, you cannot view the properties of the replicated child folder to manage it. This issue occurs even if you are the owner of the child folder and if you are logged on to a public folder that only contains the replicated child folder.
  • If you use the Outlook object model to loop through items in a folder, you may experience memory limitations, or the time that is required to process an item increases as the collection of items is processed. If you add the registry keys as described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, the issue is not resolved:
    293797 Memory or performance problems looping through items
    This issue may occur when you have mismatching Outllib.dll and Outlvbs.dll files.
  • If you open a document in a public folder that you have only Read permissions, and you make no changes, you receive the following message when you close the document:
    Unable to save changes to the document. Your changes will be put in the temporary file, 'C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF\...'.

    You can copy this file into the original folder if you want to recover your changes to the original document. You do not have sufficient permission to perform this operation on this object. See the folder contact or your system administrator.
  • When you try to programmatically forward a Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format (RTF) e-mail message that inserts an embedded in-line object on a line other than the first line of the e-mail message, the embedded in-line object may be inserted in the wrong position in the forwarded e-mail message.
  • When you use LDAP as an address book provider, and then you remove two or more members from a distribution list that was created in the Contacts view in Microsoft Outlook, the members may not be successfully removed.
  • When you use Outlook 2002 in an Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4) environment, Outlook 2002 may close unexpectedly when you set the filter node for an XML view.
  • When you use Outlook 2002 to connect to a POP3 mailbox, and then download e-mail messages to a personal folders (.pst) file, the e-mail messages that are downloaded to the .pst file do not have the PR_CONVERSATION_INDEX property present.
  • When you use Outlook 2002, you may not be able to programmatically retrieve user properties that are in the form of large strings.
  • If you have the Message control on a MultiPage control in a custom form, the Message control is not updated when you switch to a different tab and then switch back.
  • Outlook 2002 may quit unexpectedly when you try to recover deleted items. This issue occurs if one of the items has a long title in the Subject box.
  • When you compose an e-mail message offline, go online and permit Outlook to automatically synchronize and send your e-mail message, the e-mail message that you just sent while offline does not appear in your online Sent Items folder.
  • In Outlook 2002, if you try to open an item that has an expired digital signature in a public folder where you have Reviewer or Author permissions, you receive the following error message:
    Can't open this item. You do not have appropriate permissions to perform this action.
  • When you try to add a delegate to your user profile, a delegate whose user account is based on a group is added with no permissions.
  • If you click a link in a received e-mail message to open a file, and then click to select the Always ask before opening this type of file check box in the Opening Mail Attachment dialog box so that you do not receive a prompt when you perform this kind of action, you are still receive the prompt with the Opening Mail Attachment dialog box when you click a link in a received e-mail message to open a file.

    This issue may occur after you install the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    817422 "Always ask before opening this type of file" check box not available
  • Outlook 2002 may quit unexpectedly when you forward or reply to an e-mail message after you click the Prefix each line of the original message option in the E-mail Options dialog box.
  • If you copy a list of attendees from an existing e-mail message to the Options Attendees box in a new meeting request, a resource for the meeting may be moved to the To box when the e-mail names are resolved.
  • If you have the Signatures option selected on the Mail Format tab when you design a custom form, Outlook may quit unexpectedly, and you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    If you view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature similar to the following:

  • If the following conditions are true when you use the GetFreeBusy() method to programmatically return the FreeBusy data
    • The data that is in the Start Date field is the first of the month between April and October.
    • The Time Zone is east of or equal to coordinated universal time (Greenwich Mean Time) during Daylight Saving Time.
    the returned data is incorrect.
  • If you attach an Outlook Rich Text Format e-mail message to a new e-mail message, and then move the attached RTF e-mail message, the number that is returned incorrectly includes the number of times that the attached e-mail message was moved when you programmatically use the Attachments.Count property to return the number of attachments that are contained in the e-mail message.
  • If you use SMTP in Outlook 2002, and your SMTP server has an e-mail message size restriction imposed, Outlook may repeatedly try to resend the outgoing e-mail message when you send an e-mail message that exceeds the SMTP e-mail size restriction.
  • If you click Find while in a .pst file to search your mailbox folders, you receive the following error message when you click a found e-mail message:
    Error: Can't open the item.

    Could not open the item. Try again.
  • If the following conditions are true when you design a custom form in Outlook 2002
    • You click to select the Set the initial value of this field to dialog box.
    • You type more than 255 characters in the text box that appears.
    • You click to clear the Set the initial value of this field to check box.
    • You click to select the Set the initial value of this field to check box again.
    the text that exceeds 255 characters in the text box is truncated.
  • When your insertion point is in a combo box on a custom form in Outlook 2002, the buttons that are on the Input Method Editor (IME) may not be available.
  • When you try to connect to your SMTP e-mail account, Outlook 2002 may time-out, and you cannot connect to your mail box. This issue may occur when SMTP is configured over the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to use port 587.
  • If you use a third-party archival program that moves archived e-mail messages to another location and inserts a shortcut to the location in an Outlook folder, Outlook 2002 may quit unexpectedly if Outlook tries to perform an auto save when you try to reply to an archived e-mail message.
  • If you design and publish a new custom contact form that contains Microsoft Visual Basic script, you may be prompted with a security warning when you use the new custom contact form
  • When you have a custom MAPI form server that implements the IClassFactory interface and the LockServer method, and the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook option in Outlook 2002 is selected when you quit Outlook, COM is not unloaded on your computer, and the form server is not shut down.
  • If you move a received e-mail message from your Inbox to another folder, and you receive a User has requested a read receipt dialog box while moving the e-mail message, and Outlook 2002 may stop responding.
  • When you open an attachment to an e-mail message that contains a half-width katakana sonant mark in the file name, the half-width katakana sonant mark is removed from the attachments file name.
  • If you query a LDAP server for a user, add the user to your contacts, and then change the default certificate of the user, Outlook 2002 may stop responding.
  • If you remove an attendee from a recurring meeting request series, all attendees may receive duplicate cancellation messages.
  • When you use the Propose new meeting time feature in Outlook 2002, the proposal may not show the Current or Proposed times.
  • After you create a rule in Outlook 2002 to print your received e-mail messages, the e-mail message is not printed. This issue may occur when you do not have an installed printer.
  • When you update a contact that has a business fax number and that is a member of a distribution list, you receive the following error message, and the contact is not updated:
    Could not find Contact "contact name (Business Fax)". It may have been deleted or moved from its original location. Would you like to remove it from this list?
  • If you create a new e-mail message from a published form that contains Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript), the date fields may lose their values, and you may receive the following error message:
    Operation failed.
  • If you copy or drag a shared folder to another mailbox, items that are marked as Private in the shared folder are not marked as Private after you copy the shared folder to the other mailbox.
  • When several certificates are available on your certificate server with various dates, Outlook 2002 may select an invalid certificate or a certificate that does not have the latest date.
  • If you open an attachment to an e-mail message in Outlook 2002, and then close the attachment, the temporary file that was created in the temporary folder is not deleted. This issue may occur when the attachment's path and file name combined is longer than 127 characters.

  • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office XP SP3 installed.

  • The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, we have not tested this fix on Office XP SP1 or Office XP SP2 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 3. If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP1 or Office XP SP2 installed, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
