SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Outlook to add a user to the permissions of a public folder, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The modified permissions cannot be saved.
When you try to use Exchange System Manager to add a user to the permissions of a public folder, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Invalid Windows handle. ID no. 80040102.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You have used PFDavAdmin, RewriteACL, or any other program that uses XML to write permissions to public folders to change the Access Control Lists (ACLs).
  • You have added the role of Reviewer to the public folders.
If you use XML to write permissions to public folders, the ACLs may become out of canonical order, even if the XML is formatted correctly. This problem occurs when the following Access Control Entries (ACEs) are written and evaluated at the same time and have the same access mask:
  • Effective
  • Container
  • Subitem
These three ACEs have the same access mask when an individual user account has its permissions set as Reviewer.
