This article contains frequently asked questions (FAQs) and related suggestions to help you troubleshoot your Xbox Live wireless connection on an Original Xbox console.
Q1: Why does nothing occur when I put the Xbox Wireless Adaptor Setup disc in the disc tray?
A1: Verify that your disc tray is functioning correctly. Put another Xbox disc in the disc tray. If the other disc works correctly, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for more information.
Q2: Why does my Xbox console not recognize the wireless adaptor?
A2:
Examine the power light on the adaptor.
Make sure that the power light is green.
If the light is not green, examine the power supply connection.
Unplug the power supply, and then plug in the power supply again.
Examine the Ethernet connection.
Make sure that the Xbox light on the wireless adaptor is green.
Disconnect the adaptor cable, and then reconnect the cable.
Q3: Why does Setup not detect my wireless network?
A3:
Determine whether there are any range issues.
You might be out of range for your wireless network. Put the Xbox console in the same room as your wireless router or your second Xbox console, and then try again.
Make sure that your router is broadcasting a wireless network name (SSID).
The wireless router’s broadcast of the SSID might be turned off. See your router documentation for more information about how to configure the broadcast of the SSID.
Q4: Why can I not save my wireless settings or password on my adaptor?
A4: Restore the factory defaults on the wireless adaptor.
Use a pointed object, such as the tip of a pen, to press and release the Restore button on the back of the adaptor. The power light first blinks green and orange, and then it turns steady orange. Wait for the power light to turn steady green.
Note When you restore the factory default settings for the adaptor, the factory default settings override the current adaptor settings. This includes changing the adaptor password back to the “admin” default.
Q5: Why do I receive an error message during setup that states that my security key is incorrect?
A5:
Verify that the security setting on the wireless router or on the second Xbox console is correct.
The security key must be the same on every device on the network. See your router documentation for information about how to determine the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key.
Note The WEP key is case-sensitive. Make sure that you type the key exactly as it appears. For 64-bit encryption, the WEP key is either 5 or 10 characters in length. For 128-bit encryption, the WEP key is either 13 or 26 characters in length.
Turn off wireless security on the wireless router or on the second Xbox console, and then turn on wireless security again.
Try a different security level and a new security key.
Make sure that you configure all the network devices to use the same security level and key.
Q6: Why does the power light on my adaptor continue to blink when I update the adaptor firmware?
A6: Reset the adaptor.
Unplug the adaptor from the power supply, and then plug in the adaptor again. The power light turns orange.
Wait for the power light to turn green. Try again to update the firmware.
Q7: Why is the wireless status listed as "not connected"?
A7:
Verify that you are using the correct wireless settings.
You might have incomplete or incorrect wireless settings for the adaptor. If you connect to a network that has a router, a base station, or a gateway, make sure that the Wireless Settings screen lists the network mode as Infrastructure.
If you connect two Xbox consoles for system link play, make sure that the Wireless Settings screen lists the network mode as Ad hoc 802.11 b/g.
Your Xbox wireless adaptor must use the same network name (SSID) and wireless security information (WEP key) as your wireless network. If you are connecting two Xbox consoles for system link play, the channel that is specified on both devices must be the same.
For more information about how to configure the wireless network settings for your router, see your router documentation.
Determine whether there are any range issues.
You might be out of range of your wireless network. Put the Xbox console in the same room as your wireless router or your second Xbox console, and then try again.
Determine whether there are any interference issues.
Your wireless connection might be receiving interference from other wireless devices. Move other devices, such as cordless telephones, away from your wireless network. Do not use these other devices when you use the wireless network.
To minimize interference from other wireless networks, change the channel for your network. Use a channel that is at least three channels away from the channel that the neighboring network uses.
For more information about how to configure your wireless settings, see your router documentation.
Q8: Why is the signal strength listed as "very low" or "low"?
A8:
Adjust the antenna on your adaptor or router.
Point the antenna up and away from any adjacent cables. Certain areas, such as directly under the antenna, receive relatively poor reception. You do not improve the reception if you point the antenna toward another wireless component.

Q9: Why can I not connect to Xbox Live?
A9:
Subscribe to Xbox Live.
If you do not already have an Xbox Live subscription, contact Microsoft at the following telephone number in the United States or Canada to purchase an Xbox Live subscription: 1 (800) 4MY-XBOX (469-9269).
Make sure that your Xbox console can connect to your wireless router.
If the Wireless Status screen displays the connection status as “Not Connected,” see question 7.
Determine whether a computer on the network can connect to the Internet.
If the Wireless Status screen shows the connection status as “Connected,” but the computer on the network cannot connect to the Internet, the problem may be the Internet connection. Make sure that you use the correct type of cable to connect the router to the modem.
Make sure that you firmly plug the cable into each port.
Verify that the status lights for each network device indicate that the connections receive power and that the devices are functioning correctly.
