FIX: The Open dialog box stops responding when you try to view a file that is under ClearCase version control in Visual Studio .NET 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, if you click Open on the File menu, the Open dialog box may appear to stop responding (hang). When this problem occurs, the Open dialog box experiences 95 percent CPU usage.

This problem occurs if you use the IDE to list files in folders that are under IBM Rational ClearCase version control, and the files are set to the ClearCase dynamic view.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Activate the update

Note In some instances, steps must be taken on the destination computer for this update to provide the expected functionality.

To activate this fix, follow these steps:

Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry key:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find"
Click Edit, point to New, and then click DWORD.
Type DisableAutoSelect, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DisableAutoSelect, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Notes

With this fix enabled, the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications code that uses the SelectedItems property will not function as expected because the fix no longer selects the first file.
The Multiple Directory View, FTP, and History views of the File Open dialog box are not affected when you enable the
DisableAutoSelect
registry key.
