Access Violation Occurs When You Run a Multithreaded Program on a Heavily Loaded Computer

SYMPTOMS

When you run a program in a multithreaded environment, you may experience both of the following symptoms:
  • The program intermittently stops responding (hangs).
  • The program intermittently crashes and generates an access violation error message.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The computer running the program is under a heavy load.
  • The program creates and destroys ios-derived classes in multiple threads.
  • The program uses the old iostream library instead of the Standard C++ library that was introduced in Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites
