FIX: The IRR function in Visual Basic .NET 2003 returns results that are different from the results in Excel or Visual Basic 6.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 2003, the IRR function may return a different result for some fringe cases when you compare the result to a Microsoft Excel calculated result or to a Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 calculated result.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the IRR function algorithm in Visual Studio .NET 2003 is slightly different from the Microsoft Excel algorithm and the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 algorithm.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
