You receive a "This version of Microsoft Office Visio cannot display DGN files" error message when you open a Visio file in Visio 2007 or in Visio 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Visio file (*.vsd) in Microsoft Office Visio 2007 or in Microsoft Office Visio 2003, you may receive the following error message:
One or more DGN files were detected in this drawing. This version of Microsoft Office Visio cannot display DGN files. To see the drawing as intended, open the drawing in a previous version of Visio that can display DGN files.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Visio file contains a DGN graphic. Visio 2007 and Visio 2003 do not support the DGN graphics format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, try to open the file in Microsoft Visio 2002 or earlier.
