When you start Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 for the first time after you have upgraded from an earlier version of Microsoft Outlook, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the
Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened.
If there is a Pocket PC device in the cradle, you will continue to receive this error message until you restart Microsoft Windows without the Pocket PC device attached.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
| • | You previously synchronized your data with a PocketPC device on the computer. |
| • | You did not restart Windows after the synchronization process. |
When Outlook 2003 installs, it does not remove the .dll files that are being held open by applets or terminate and stay resident programs from memory. Programs like ActiveSync may have active .dll files in memory. When Outlook installs new versions of these .dll files, they wait to become active until the old .dll files are no longer active in memory. When you restart Windows, the old .dll files are no longer active in memory.
This problem is caused by a file mismatch between the open .dll files and the files that are required by Outlook 2003.
