A Fujitsu private font does not appear correctly in the Unicode private use area in Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

In the Japanese version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP, when you try to use a private font that is provided by Fujitsu, the font does not appear correctly in the private use area.

The private use area is a range of code points in the Unicode coded character set that is reserved for private definition by end users or software vendors.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required.

Installation instructions for x64-based computers

There is no installer for x64-based computers. However, the files in this hotfix apply to both x64-based computers and x86-based computers. To install the hotfix on an x64-based computer, follow these steps:

Download the hotfix for the x86 platform, and then copy the package to the Drive C on the x64-based computer on which you want to install the hotfix.
At a command prompt, type 150524_JPN_i376_zip.exe and press ENTER to extract WindowsServer2003-KB831176-x86-JPN.EXE.
At a command prompt, type WindowsServer2003-KB831176-x86-JPN.EXE /x to extract the files to the C:\Windows\Exp folder.
Restart the computer in Recovery Console. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 OS Media.
2. Press any key when prompted at boot to boot from the media.
3. Press R in the Welcome to Setup screen to start using Recovery Console.
4. Select the Windows Installation to logon to when prompted and enter the Administrator’s password.
Change directory (cd) to the C:\Windows\Exp\rtmqfe folder.
Delete the Tahoma.ttf and the tahomabd.ttf files. These two files do not have to be replaced.
Replace the .ttf files in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder with the remaining .ttf files in the rtmqfe folder. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt and then press Enter:
copy C:\Windows\Exp\rtmqfe\<FileName> C:\Windows\Fonts\<FileName>
Additionally, replace the .ttc files in the C:\Windows\Fonts\ folder with the .ttc files in the rtmqfe\lang folder. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt and then press Enter:
copy C:\Windows\Exp\rtmqfe\lang\<FileName> C:\Windows\Fonts\<FileName>
Restart the computer, and start Windows normally.
Delete the expanded folder that you created in step 5, together with the hotfix files (150524_JPN_i376_zip.exe and WindowsServer2003-KB831176-x86-JPN.EXE).

Note These steps apply to the Japanese version of Windows Server 2003. To install the hotfix on other language versions of Windows, replace the file names with the actual file names that you have to use

Restart requirement

You must restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.
