Article ID: 831588 - Last Review: April 7, 2006 - Revision: 2.2 FIX: The "catch by" reference does not work with the copy constructor that is defined in your Visual C++ .NET 2003 applicationSYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, when you build and then run an application that you created by using Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003, the "catch by" reference does not work with the copy constructor. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Visual C++ .NET compiler cannot catch an exception by using the base type of the exception if
the copy constructor is not public and if the exception is caught by its
reference. RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
