SYMPTOMS

When you attach a new USB device, such as a digital camera, to your Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004-based computer, Media Center does not display the device in Other Media.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you are running Media Center in a window, instead of in full-screen mode. Microsoft Windows XP detects the new device, but this information is not passed on to the Media Center program when it is in windowed mode.

When Media Center is in full-screen mode, Media Center directly processes the attachment and activation of the new USB device.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Unplug the USB cable for the USB device.
  2. In Media Center, click the Maximize button.
  3. Attach the USB device.
Media Center should now recognize the USB device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
