Article ID: 833281 - Last Review: July 24, 2007 - Revision: 3.11 An incremental backup includes unchanged files and is larger than expected in Windows 2000 and in Windows Server 2003
On This PageSYMPTOMSWhen you back up files, you can perform either an incremental backup or a normal backup. You expect an incremental backup to back up only those files that have changed since your previous normal backup or your previous incremental backup. However, when you perform an incremental backup, some files that were previously backed up and that have not changed are included in the backup. This behavior causes the incremental backup sets to be larger than expected. CAUSEThis problem may occur if you use Group Policy to manage and maintain permissions on files and on shared folders. Every time that the Group Policy settings for file system security are applied, the security descriptor for each file that is included in the policy is modified. The security descriptor is modified even if you do not change any permissions. When the access control list (ACL) for a file is updated, the archive bit is reset.
