A document that is opened from a hyperlink in Internet Explorer opens slowly in Office XP programs

When you open a Microsoft Office XP document from a hyperlink that is contained on a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the document may open slowly.

This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:

• You use a Microsoft Windows 2000-based or Microsoft Windows XP-based computer to view a Web page that contains a link to the document in Internet Explorer.
• The document that is opened from the hyperlink was saved to a Microsoft Windows 2000 server.
• The document that is opened from the hyperlink contains many custom document properties.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Office XP Hotfix Package that is dated May 9, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the MaxCachedStreamSize registry key and to activate the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

To activate this hotfix, follow these steps:

1. Quit all Office XP programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
4. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common
5. After you select the key that is specified in step 4, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
6. Type MaxCachedStreamSize, and then press ENTER.
7. Right-click MaxCachedStreamSize, and then click Modify.
8. In the Value data box, click Decimal, type a value between 10000 and 200000, and then click OK.
9. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
