Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one file that you can download. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that are included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

If a distributed transaction is opened, and a remote procedure call in that transaction fails and rolls back, later changes that are made at the local server in the scope of the distributed transaction may successfully commit although the changes should have rolled back.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

MORE INFORMATION

The following remote stored procedure fails with a "divide-by-zero" error message:
	CREATE PROCEDURE p_TESTNAME_STATEMENTABORT
	AS
	BEGIN
		SELECT 1/0
	END
When you execute this stored procedure remotely in a distributed transaction, later operations may succeed, although the error in the remote procedure should roll back the whole distributed transaction:
BEGIN distributed TRAN
	EXEC [cmathews10\sql2ksp3].master.dbo.p_TESTNAME_STATEMENTABORT
	SELECT @@error
COMMIT TRAN
go

Server: Msg 8134, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
Divide by zero error encountered.
The transaction active in this session has been committed or aborted by another session.

-----------
8134

(1 row(s) affected)

Server: Msg 3902, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
The COMMIT TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionCheckForData (CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.

Connection Broken
The SET XACT_ABORT ON statement does not correct this behavior. This behavior may be intermittent.
