"Permissions on <FolderName> are incorrectly ordered" error message when you view the permissions of a subfolder in Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Cacls.exe command-line tool to configure permissions on a folder and all subfolders that are contained in that folder, you may find that the subfolders in the folder do not inherit the permissions as expected. For example, when you create a new subfolder, and then you try to view the permissions that are set on that subfolder, you receive the following error message:
The permissions on FolderName are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. Press OK to continue and sort the permissions correctly, or Cancel to reset the permissions.

CAUSE

The Cacls.exe command-line tool incorrectly removes a bit from the discretionary access control list (DACL) of a folder that inherits its permissions from the new subfolders that you create in that folder.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

Prerequisites

This hotfix requires Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
