"Error 1608" error message when you try to upgrade to Office 2003 on a computer that has the German version of Windows XP installed

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2003 on a computer that has Microsoft Works Suite 2004 and the German version of Microsoft Windows XP installed, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1608. Setup could not locate a version of Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP on the selected drive. Click OK to stop the installation. If you have a version of Microsoft Office on CD-ROM, run Setup again.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have installed Works Suite 2004 to a different location than the default installation location.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Locate the install folder for Works Suite 2004

Click Locate, point the Setup program to the location on your hard disk drive where Works Suite 2004 is installed, and then click OK to continue the installation.

Method 2: Insert the Works Suite 2004 CD-ROM

Click Locate, insert your Works Suite 2004 CD-ROM, point the Setup program to your CD-ROM drive, and then click OK to continue the installation.
