SUMMARY

This article describes the Microsoft Office Word 2003 issues that are fixed in the Word 2003 hotfix package that is dated March 1, 2004.

Issues that are fixed in the hotfix package

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
  • 832356  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832356/ ) "Backup of .wbk is open by another user" message when you save a document in Word 2003
  • 833994  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833994/ ) Custom menu items may be lost, rearranged, or repeated on the Insert menu in Word 2003
  • 837011  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837011/ ) You receive the "this file needs to be saved using the Word 6.0/95 text converter" error message when you save a document in Word 2003
  • 835219  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835219/ ) Word 2003 document may print with your markup when you print from your Windows desktop or from Windows Explorer
  • 835714  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835714/ ) You may not see the bookmark brackets if a bookmark is next to a field when you turn on the Field shading option in a Word 2003 document
  • 837004  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837004/ ) Text may be missing when you view a Word 2003 document in different views or when you scroll the document in Word 2003
The following issues are also fixed in this hotfix package, but they were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • If you insert a REF field (a cross reference field or a reference field) in the body of a Microsoft Word document that references a bookmark that contains a LISTNUM field in the header of the Word document, the results of the REF field appear as 1.
  • If you insert a hyperlink to a mapped drive in an e-mail message when Word is used as your e-mail editor, the hyperlink is not a hyperlink when you read the e-mail message if Word is not used as your e-mail editor.
  • When your Word document contains German-language text with the acronym "i.V." and you use the AutoFormat features in Word or you view the Document Map, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to the following:
App Name App Version Module Name Module Version Offset
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 00a26309

  • When you view your nested conditional fields in the header or in the footer of your Word document, the nested conditional fields appear blank. This problem occurs after you install the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

821526  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821526/ ) Word 2002 crashes when you print a document in the background
  • When you click a hyperlink in Word, and then click the Back button on the Web toolbar, you return to the correct location from where you clicked the hyperlink. However, if you click a second hyperlink, and then click the Back button on the Web toolbar, you are returned to the first hyperlink location (not the second hyperlink location).
