Description of the Office 2000 Update: February 10, 2004

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Office 2000. By installing this optional update, the MsiFileHash table for your Microsoft Office product is updated. Updating the MsiFileHash table will help Office reduce the chance that the Office Setup program will need access to your Office 2000 source CD-ROM when you install Office updates in certain scenarios. Additionally, by updating the MsiFileHash table, the need to copy files from your source will be reduced, resulting in faster file copy (when necessary) and reduced network traffic (when applicable).

How to download and how to install the update

Important Before you install this update, make sure that you meet the following requirements:

• Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version
  Although you do not have to have Windows Installer 2.0 or later to install this update, it is best to install Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version to obtain the benefits of this update. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer update requirements" section.
• Office 2000 Service Release 1
  Before you install this update, install the Office 2000 SR-1/SR1a Update. When you install Office 2000 SR-1, you must provide your source Office 2000 files (such as the Office 2000 CD-ROM).

Install the Office 2000 Update: KB835220

To download and install the Office 2000 Update: KB835220, follow these steps:

   Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
   Note The Japanese version of the Office 2000 Update: KB835220 updates an additional product, Microsoft Office 2000 Language Pack for English. Microsoft Office 2000 Language Pack for English is included in some international versions of Office 2000 products.
2. Click Save to save the download to the folder that you selected.
   
   For example, click Save to save the Office2000-kb835220-client-enu.exe file to the folder that you selected.
3. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click the .exe file that you downloaded--for example, double-click Office2000-kb835220-client-enu.exe.
4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
6. When you receive a message that indicates that the installation was successful, click OK.

Additional notes

• After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the update was installed, you must remove Office 2000, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.
• If the Office 2000 Update: KB835220 is already installed on your computer, you receive the following error message when you try to install the Office 2000 Update: KB835220:
  This update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied.

Windows Installer update requirements

Both Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) include Windows Installer 2.0 or later. To install the latest version of the Windows Installer, visit one of the following Microsoft Web sites:

When you use the Microsoft Office Updates Web site to install Office 2000 updates, you may have to have access to your original Office 2000 source files such as the Office 2000 CD-ROM. The update routine may have to access the source files from your installation source. For example, if you installed Office 2000 from the Office 2000 CD, the update may have to have access to the CD that you used when you installed Office 2000.

The reason behind this behavior is that the updates from the Office Update Web site are named “binary” updates. These updates do not replace files--for example, .dll files and .exe files. Instead, the updates actually update pieces inside the .dll files and .exe files. To do this, you may have to access the original file so that the original file and the binary updates can successfully combine to make the updated file that is installed on the computer.

This update prevents the unnecessary copying of files that have not changed. This prevents a request for a file to be copied even though it has not changed. The Windows Installer did this originally because it could not detect when unversioned files may or may not have been corrupted.

For best results, when you use this tool, future updates will use full-file updates instead of the binary update. A full-file update is better because it will provide the whole new file for the files that have changed. If the current version of the file is the same as the original file, there is no need to include it in the update. When this update is combined with full-file updates, a source will only be needed for files that are damaged or are missing, and that are not included in the full-file update.
