You receive an "Error 80072EF7" error message when you connect to the Windows Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site

When you connect to the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

This issue may occur if the default gateway settings that are configured for the network adapter that is installed on your computer are incorrect.

To resolve this issue, verify the IP address settings that are configured for your network adapter, including the IP address of the default gateway. To do so:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type winipcfg, and then click OK.
3. In the Ethernet Adapter Information dialog box, click your network adapter, and then click More Info.
4. Verify that your network adapter is configured with the correct IP settings, including the correct IP address in the Default Gateway box.
   
   Note You may have to contact your network administrator to obtain the appropriate IP settings for your network adapter.

The following list contains information about some default gateway options. Note that this is not a complete list; this list may not contain an option that is optimal for the configuration of your local area network (LAN). Additionally, the list does not contain information about security or firewall considerations. Things to consider when you configure default gateway settings include the following:

• A significant number of small networks may be connected to the Internet by using a device that provides Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services or Network Address Translation (NAT) services. These types of devices are typically used as the default gateway.
• The IP address of the router is typically used as the default gateway if your LAN is connected to the Internet by using a router and if your LAN is made up of a single subnet.
• In some configurations, you may have to use an IP address that is provided by your Internet service provider (ISP).
• You can also configure a non-existent default gateway address for clients on the appropriate subnet or subnets. When you do so, the clients cannot access network resources that are outside the local subnet. Use this option with caution.
