You receive a "The product key you entered requires a version of Microsoft Visio 2000 or 2002 to upgrade" message when you try to upgrade an earlier version of Visio to Visio 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup program to upgrade an earlier version of Microsoft Visio to Microsoft Office Visio 2003, you may receive the following message:

The product key you entered requires a version of Microsoft Visio 2000 or 2002 to upgrade. If one of these versions of Microsoft Visio is not installed on your machine, you will need to supply a version of Microsoft Visio on CD-ROM in the next step. Click OK to continue with the upgrade or click Cancel to stop the installation.

When you click OK to close this message, you may see the Product Compliance Check dialog box with the following message and a drop-down list to select a drive:

Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine. Please select the drive where a qualifying product can be found.

If you select one of the drives and then click OK, you may receive the following error message:

Error 1608. Could not find any previously installed compliant products on the machine for installing this product.

You receive these messages even if Microsoft Visio 2000 is installed on your computer or if the Visio 2000 CD is inserted in your CD drive or DVD drive when the Setup program prompts you for a qualifying product.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you run the Setup program to install an upgrade version of Visio 2003, and one of the following conditions is true:

An earlier version of Visio that qualifies for an upgrade to Visio 2003 is located on a mapped network drive or in a folder that is different from the default installation folder.
An earlier version of Visio that qualifies for an upgrade to Visio 2003 is not installed on your computer.
The Visio 2000 SR1 or Visio 2002 CD is damaged or not available for the product compliance check to validate.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods depending on your situation:

Make sure that an earlier version of Visio that qualifies for an upgrade to Visio 2003 is installed on your computer. Then, run the Setup program to upgrade to Visio 2003. The earlier versions of Visio that qualify for an upgrade to Visio 2003 are listed as follows:
- Microsoft Visio 2000 Service Release 1 (SR1)
  - Microsoft Visio 2000 Professional Edition SR-1
  - Microsoft Visio 2000 Standard Edition SR-1
  - Microsoft Visio 2000 Technical Edition SR-1
  - Microsoft Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition SR-1
- Microsoft Visio 2002
  - Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
  - Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  - Microsoft Visio for Enterprise Architects
Otherwise, run the Setup program to upgrade to Visio 2003. Insert the Visio 2000 SR-1 CD or the Visio 2002 CD in the CD drive or DVD drive when you are prompted by the Product Compliance Check dialog box of the Setup program. Click the drop-down list to select the CD drive or DVD drive, and then click OK in the Product Compliance Check dialog box to continue the Setup program.
