SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert rows into a table from a source file, such as a text file, by using the BULK INSERT Transact-SQL command, the rows may not be successfully inserted into the table. This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The table is referenced by an indexed view.
  • The view that references the table has a clustered index.
  • The view definition involves joining the table with another table or with other tables
Note You can successfully insert rows into the table by using the INSERT Transact-SQL statement.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the table where you want to insert rows by using the BULK INSERT Transact-SQL statement is referenced in the inner part of a join. The table is referenced in the definition of the indexed view, and the outer part of the join returns no rows. An incorrect query execution plan is generated, and the execution branch that inserts the rows into the table does not run. Therefore, the rows are not inserted into the table.
