BUG: You receive an "Unable to determine system default collation" error message when you try to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) from your computer, the Setup program may fail, and you may receive the following error messages.

Error message 1

Unable to determine system default collation.


Error message 2

Fatal error during installation.


This problem may occur when one of the following conditions is true:
  • You remove SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) on a computer that has an operating system locale that does not have a default SQL Server collation mapping.
  • You remove SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) after the regional setting is changed to an operating system locale that does not have a default SQL Server collation mapping.
  • You remove an instance of SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) that was installed by specifying a collation mapping by using the COLLATION switch on a computer that has an operating system locale that does not have a default SQL Server collation mapping.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 include several new Windows locales that are not supported by the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 collation mappings. Additionally, these Windows locales are not supported by SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine and SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows). The locales in the following table are not supported by SQL Server 2000 collation mappings:
