SUMMARY

When you try to run Adaptec Easy CD Creator or Adaptec DirectCD on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the Adaptec program may not run and you may receive Stop error messages on a blue screen. This issue occurs because certain versions of Easy CD Creator and DirectCD are not compatible with Windows 2000. This article describes four methods that you can use to resolve this issue:
  • Rename the Easy CD creator drivers or the DirectCD drivers that are incompatible with Windows 2000 so that they do not start
  • Disable the incompatible drivers in Safe mode
  • Disable the incompatible drivers in Device Manager
  • Disable the incompatible drivers with the disable command

SYMPTOMS

When you try to work with Easy CD Creator 4.01 or earlier or DirectCD 3.0 or earlier in Windows 2000, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • When you try to upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to Windows 2000 Professional and either Easy CD Creator version 4.01 or earlier or DirectCD 3.0 or earlier is installed, you may receive the following Stop error message:
    Stop: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x804918d0, 0x00000001, 0x00000001)
  • When you try to run Easy CD Creator 4.01 or earlier or DirectCD 3.0 or earlier on your Windows 2000-based computer, the program may not run correctly and your computer may stop responding (hang). Also, you may receive one of the following error messages, and you may not be able to start your computer in Safe mode:
    Stop 0x0000001E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
    Stop 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
    Stop 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

CAUSE

This issue may occur if either Easy CD Creator 4.01 or earlier or DirectCD 3.0 or earlier is installed on a Windows 2000-based computer. Easy CD Creator 4.01 or earlier and DirectCD 3.0 or earlier are not compatible with Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

You can use this method if you receive a Stop error message when you upgrade a computer that is running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation to Windows 2000 Professional and either Easy CD Creator or DirectCD is installed. You may also use this method if Easy CD Creator and DirectCD are installed on a Windows 2000-based computer and you cannot start your computer in Safe mode.
  1. Start Windows in the Recovery Console:
    1. Start your computer with the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks or with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
    2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair a Windows installation.
    3. Press C to start the Windows Recovery Console. Type the number for the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

      Note If you do not have an administrator password, just press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder. To do this, type cd system32\drivers, and then press ENTER.
  3. At the command prompt, type dir, and then press ENTER.
  4. Rename the following files in the Drivers folder so that they have an .old file name extension:
    • Aspi32.sys
    • Cdr4vsd.sys
    • Cdudf.sys
    • Cdrpwd.sys
    To rename a file, type ren old file name new file name, and then press ENTER. For example, to rename the Aspi32.sys file to Aspi32.old, type ren aspi32.sys aspi32.old, and then press ENTER.
  5. Restart your computer.

Method 2

You can use this method if you receive a Stop error message when you try to run Easy CD Creator or Direct CD on a Windows 2000-based computer, and you cannot start your computer in Safe mode.
  1. Start Windows in the Recovery Console. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start your computer with the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks or with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
    2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair a Windows installation.
    3. Press C to start the Windows Recovery Console. Type the number for the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

      Note If you do not have an administrator password, just press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, type listsvc, and then press ENTER.

    Note You can use the listsvc command to display the list of services and drivers that are available on your computer.
  3. Locate the following drivers in the listsvc command output:
    • Aspi32
    • Cdr4vsd
    • Cdrpwd
    • Cdudf
  4. Use the disable command to disable the drivers that you located in step 3. To do this, type disable name of item you want to disable at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

    For example, to disable Aspi32, type disable aspi32, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.
  6. Remove Easy CD Creator and DirectCD.

Method 3

You can use this method if you receive a Stop error message when you try to run Easy CD Creator or DirectCD on a Windows 2000-based computer and you can start your computer in Safe mode.
  1. Start your computer in Safe mode:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. After the BIOS information is displayed, press F8.
    3. Use the down arrow to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
    4. Use the up arrow and down arrow to select your computer, and then press ENTER.
    5. Log on by using your administrative account and password.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. On the View menu, click Show hidden devices.
  5. Double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
  6. Right-click ASPI32, and then click Properties.
  7. Click the Driver tab, click Stop, and then click Disabled.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Repeat steps 6 through 8 for CDR4VSD, CDRPWD, and CDUDF.

Method 4

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
You can use this method if you receive a Stop error message when you try to run Easy CD Creator or DirectCD on a Windows 2000-based computer and you can start your computer in Safe mode.
  1. Start your computer in Safe mode:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. After the BIOS information is displayed, press F8.
    3. Use the down arrow to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
    4. Use the up arrow and down arrow to select your computer, and then press ENTER.
    5. Log on by using your administrative account and password.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASPI32
  5. In the right pane, click Start.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  7. Under Base, click Decimal.
  8. In the Value data box, type 4, and then click OK.
  9. Repeat steps 4 through 8 for CDR4VSD, CDRPWD, and CDUDF values.

MORE INFORMATION

The Aspi32.sys version 4.01 file and the Cdr4vsd.sys file are loaded when you start your computer. These files are not compatible with Windows 2000. The error messages that are listed earlier in this article may occur when the Cdr4vsd.sys file and any one of the following network adapter components in Device Manager are enabled:
  • Direct Parallel
  • IR Modem Port
  • IR Port
  • WAN Miniport (IP)
  • WAN Miniport (L2TP)
  • WAN Miniport (PPTP)
