Article ID: 840864 - Last Review: October 27, 2006 - Revision: 3.2 You receive an incorrect status message after you deploy SMS 2003 Advanced Client hotfixesSYMPTOMSAfter you successfully install the first of a group of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client hotfixes, an incorrect status message may be returned for the second and later hotfixes. This symptom can occur regardless of the success or failure of the hotfixes that you install after the first hotfix. Each incorrect status message contains text that refers to the first hotfix installation. You may experience this symptom when you distribute at least two of the following hotfixes to a computer that has the SMS 2003 Advanced Client installed. Note You do not have to distribute these hotfixes at the same time for this symptom to occur.
The program for advertisement "advertID" failed ("packageID" - "KB831648 - Advanced Client Patch Install"). The program was able to be executed but the system was restarted unexpectedly before the program could be completed or before status could be recorded. No installation status MIF was found after the system restarted.
Possible cause: The program performs a restart of the client computer when it completes, but the 'After running' setting in the program's properties is not set to Program restarts computer, or the client machine was restarted while the program was running. Solution: Verify the above. If the program does a restart when it completes, even if it only requires a restart in some cases, modify the program's properties and set 'After running' to 'Program restarts computer'. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the status MIF only contains data for the first hotfix that was installed. Therefore, the data does not meet the MIF matching criteria of the advertisement for the hotfix that is being installed. The status MIF that is generated by subsequent hotfixes refers to the data from the first hotfix. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem and confirm that the hotfixes are successfully installed, you can create an inventory for a specific file or SMS 2003 Advanced Client component version that is installed by a hotfix. For more information about how to use Software Inventory to find or collect a file, see the "Collecting Software Inventory" topic in SMS Administrator Help. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
