Domain users on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional-based computer receive a message that their password is about to expire when they log on to a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server domain controller, and when they try to change the password, they may receive the following error message:
This problem occurs because the User must logon to change password check box is selected in the account policy on the Windows NT 4.0 Server domain controller.
Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

File informationThe English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, you must either manually change the user's password or deselect the Users must log on in order to change password option on the Windows NT 4.0 domain. To deselect this option, follow these steps on one of the domain controllers.
Note By default, the Users must log on to change password check box is not selected in Windows NT 4.0 Server.
