How to enable SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services on Windows XP Service Pack 2

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to enable Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services on computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. You must configure Windows Firewall to allow Reporting Services network connectivity. By default, Windows Firewall is enabled.

You can access Reporting Services locally or remotely. If you are accessing Reporting Services locally, you do not have to make any changes to Windows Firewall. If you are accessing Reporting Services remotely, through a browser or through an application, you must enable Reporting Services by opening certain required ports on Windows Firewall.

For Reporting Services, you must enable ports for HTTP and for HTTPS access, if you are using HTTPS.

Note Port 80 is the default port setting for Reporting Services.

If you are not sure if you are using the default port setting, follow these steps:

Open Control Panel, and then click Administrative Tools.
Click Internet Information Services, right-click the Reporting Services Web site, and then click Properties. The port that Reporting Services is using is listed in the TCP Port box.

To enable Reporting Services on Windows XP Service Pack 2, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Run dialog box, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Port.
In the Add a Port dialog box, type Your port number in the Port number box, and then click the TCP button.
Type a name for the port, such as HTTP, and then click OK.
If you are using HTTPS, type 443 in the Port Number box, and then click the TCP button.
Type a name for the port, such as HTTPS, and then click OK.
On the Exceptions tab, you will see the new Service. To enable the port, click to select the check box next to your new service.
Click OK.

If you later decide to disable these ports, you can clear the check box next to your new service.

Note If you are accessing the Reporting Services Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider remotely, you must enable port 135.
