FIX: You may receive a "Microsoft Development Environment has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message when you try to exit Visual Studio .NET 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you try to exit Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 after you locate the definition of a data type in the Object Browser, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Development Environment has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Visual Studio .NET 2002 Service Pack 1.

Steps to reproduce the problem

1.Start Visual Studio .NET 2002.
2.On the File menu, point to New, and then click Project.

The New Project dialog box appears.
3.Under Project Types, click Visual Basic Projects.
4.Under Templates, click Console Application.
5.In the Name box, type MyApp, and then click OK.

By default, the Module1.vb file is created.
6.In the Module1.vb file, locate the following code:
Sub Main()
7.Add the following code after the code that you located in the previous step:
Dim MyVar As Short
8.Move the pointer to the following text, and then click anywhere in the text to set the insertion point:

Short

For example, move the pointer to the previous text, and then click between "h" and "o" to set the insertion point.
9.Right-click the insertion point, and then click Go To Definition.

The Object Browser tool starts.
10.On the File menu, click Exit.

The Microsoft Development Environment dialog box appears.
11.Click Yes to save the changes. Or, click No to discard the changes.

You may receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
