The "This computer is locked" smart card error message is incorrect

Symptoms

When you try to unlock your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that has your smart card in it, you may receive the following error message:
This computer is locked. Only Domain_Name\User_Name or an administrator can unlock this computer.
You may receive this error message if either of the following conditions is true:
  • When you try to unlock your Windows 2000-based computer, you type the wrong smart card personal identification number (PIN) number.
  • When you try to unlock your Windows 2000-based computer, your smart card is locked.
However, this error message does not correctly describe the reason why you cannot unlock your computer.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
