FIX: You may receive an alignment exception when you try to initiate a PPTP connection or a public network connection may disconnect despite the IdleTimeoutMS setting in the registry in Windows CE 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows CE 5.0, you may experience the following problems:

A Windows CE device is configured as a network gateway. When a client computer on the private network side of the Windows CE device tries to initiate a PPTP connection, the Windows CE device may fail and you may receive an alignment exception. This problem is most likely to occur when the public side of the network uses packet compression, such as a 1xRTT radio link.
When the public network connection is auto-dialed for Internet Connection Sharing but there is no current activity, the dialed connection may be disconnected after less than 430 seconds. This behavior occurs despite the setting of the IdleTimeoutMS registry option. This behavior may cause more frequent disconnects and redials than you want.

When a PTPP packet arrives on the public interface, the Internet Protocol Network Address Translation (IPNAT) code tries to examine the packet to route to the private network. With header compression on the incoming packet, some fields are not aligned on WORD boundaries. This behavior causes a data alignment fault in the microprocessor when IPNAT accesses the fields.

Prerequisites

This software update is supported only if all previously issued software updates for this product have also been installed.

Restart requirement

After you install this software update, you must perform a clean build of the whole platform. To clean the platform, click Clean on the Build menu. To build the platform, click Build Platform on the Build menu. You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this software update.
