Symptoms

When you try to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer user interface to change the Internet Explorer Manage Add-ons settings, you may not be able to make any changes.

Cause

This problem occurs because Internet Explorer has no way to turn on additional Manage Add-ons columns through the keyboard.

Workaround

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

If you modify the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
registry subkey, you can turn on these additional columns. When you modify the registry subkey, you must add the ManageAddonColumns DWORD value.

Each Managed Add-ons column is associated with a hexadecimal number. The following table describes the hexadecimal number that corresponds to each column:

Hexadecimal NumberColumn Name
0x10Last Accessed
0x20Used
0x40Blocked
0x80Class ID
0x200In Folder
0x400Version
To turn on additional columns, add up the hexadecimal numbers of the columns that you want, and then make that sum the DWORD value of ManageAddonColumns. For example, to turn on all the columns, add all the hexadecimal values together, as follows:
(0x10 + 0x20 + 0x40 + 0x80 + 0x200 + 0x400) = 0x6F0
To add only the Class ID column, change the value of ManageAddonColumns to 0x80.

To turn on additional columns, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate and then click the following Registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
  3. Click Edit, point to New, click DWORD Value, type ManageAddonColumns, and then press ENTER.
  4. In the Value data box, type the hexadecimal number that corresponds to the columns that you want to appear.
  5. Press ENTER, and then quit Registry Editor. The new columns that you specified are now turned on in Internet Explorer. If the columns are not turned on, verify the changes that you made to the registry.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More information

Manage Add-ons contains a list of add-ons that has a default set of columns. To customize the columns that appear, right-click the column headings, and then click to check or click to clear the column names in the list that appears. However, you cannot use the keyboard to turn on these columns in Internet Explorer. Keyboard users must modify the registry to turn these columns on.

By default, the following columns appear in Manage Add-ons:
  • Name
  • Publisher
  • Status
  • Type
  • File
You can turn on the following additional columns by right-clicking the column headings:
  • Last Accessed
  • Used
  • Blocked
  • Class ID
  • In Folder
  • Version
