Question:

I'm trying to add a service type item to a Manufacturing Bill of Material and I'm getting this message:

"You can't add this item to this bill of materials because the component and the parent part have different valuation methods". Service type items don't have a valuation method, why can't I add the service type item?

Answer:

Only items that are a type of Sales inventory can be added to a standard costing method parent item Manufacturing Bill of Material. The reason for this is the standard cost rollup and revalue. The standard cost rollup and revalue only looks for an item type of sales inventory.
