Multiple grand totals are missing after you set the Excel97Subtotals Windows registry value

After you install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article and configure the Excel97Subtotals registry entry value to 1, Microsoft Office Excel 2003 reverts to the original ordering behavior as you expect:

However, the multiple grand totals that are present in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows and in Microsoft Excel 2000 are not present. Because the grand totals are not present, there may be interference with solutions that automatically compensate for multiple grand totals.

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

After you install the hotfix package, configure the Excel97Subtotals registry entry to use one of the following values:

• If you use the 0 value:
  • The change in the display order of the summary and the detail data that is enabled by the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824 is in effect.
  • The removal of multiple grand totals that is enabled by the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824 is in effect.
• If you use the 1 value:
  • The order of the summary and the detail data appears as it did before you applied the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824.
  • The removal of multiple grand totals that is enabled by the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824 is in effect.
• If you use the 2 value:
  • The order of the summary and the detail data appears as it did before you applied the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824.
  • The multiple grand totals behave as it did before you applied the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824.

To configure the Excel97Subtotals registry entry, follow these steps.

Note The behavior that is enabled by this hotfix is considered a temporary measure to give users time to modify solutions that compensate for the behavior that is changed in the hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 831824. Later versions of Microsoft Excel may not support multiple grand totals.

1. Quit all the Microsoft Office programs that are running.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options
4. In the right pane, right-click Excel97Subtotals, and then click Modify.
5. In the Value data box, type the value that you want to use, and then click OK.
6. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.
