You are prompted to enter your user name and your password when you open an Office document in SharePoint Server 2007, in SharePoint Portal Server 2003, or in Windows SharePoint Services

When you click a Microsoft Office 2003 document or a Microsoft Office XP document, a Connect to ServerName dialog box appears.

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

• The Office 2003 document or the Office XP document is stored in a document library.
• The document library is stored in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site, in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site, or in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 site.
• The Web servers are part of an intranet or an extranet.

Additionally, you are prompted to enter your user name and your password even though you already entered your user name and your password to access the site.

This issue occurs if the virtual server in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is configured to use Basic authentication. Your user name and your password do not pass seamlessly from Microsoft Internet Explorer to the Office program.

To work around this issue, configure the virtual server in IIS 6.0 to use Integrated Windows authentication instead of Basic authentication. To enable Integrated Windows authentication and to disable Basic authentication for a virtual server in IIS 6.0, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your situation.

Note SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 use the term "Web application" instead of "virtual server."

If you are running SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

1. Start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
2. Click the Application Management tab, and then click Authentication providers under Application Security on the Application Management page.
3. On the Authentication Providers page, click the down arrow in the Web Application box, click Change Web Application, and then click the Web application that you want to configure.
4. In the IIS Authentication Settings area of the Edit Authentication page, click to clear the Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text) check box.
5. Click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box, and then click Negotiate (Kerberos) or NTLM, depending on the security configuration that you want.
6. Click Save.

If you are running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or Windows SharePoint Services 2.0

1. Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
2. Expand ServerName, and then expand Web Sites.
3. Right-click the virtual server that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Directory Security tab.
5. Under Authentication and access control, click Edit.
6. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, click to clear the Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text check box, and then click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box.
7. Click OK two times.
8. If the Inheritance Overrides dialog box is displayed on the screen, click the nodes that you want, and then click OK. For example, to apply the new authentication settings to all the child nodes that are listed in the Child Nodes box, click Select All, and then click OK.
9. Exit Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
