In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you run a SET IDENTITY_INSERT ON statement on a table and then you try to run a query to insert a row into the table that contains an identity column, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following where TableName is the name of the table:

Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'TableName' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the client-cached cursor query is not invalidated and the query uses the prior setting of SET INDENTITY_INSERT OFF when it tries to insert the row.

Prerequisites

You must install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 before you install this hotfix.

Restart information

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

Note SQL Server hotfix installation will stop the SQL Server service.
