SYMPTOMS

When you try to send an image file by e-mail from Microsoft Windows Explorer or Microsoft Internet Explorer in Microsoft Windows XP, the Send Pictures via E-Mail wizard does not start as expected. You are not prompted to keep the original image size or make the image smaller.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Sendmail.dll file is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

Method 1: Replace the Sendmail.dll file

  1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\system32 where %systemroot% is the drive and path for the installation of Windows, and then click OK.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, click Folder, type OldFiles, and then press ENTER.
  3. Right-click Sendmail.dll, click Cut, right-click the OldFiles folder, and then click Paste.
  4. Verify that the Send Pictures via E-Mail wizard appears as expected when you send an image in an e-mail. If the Send Pictures via E-Mail wizard does not appear as expected, go to the next method.

Method 2: Verify registry settings

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry subkeys:
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
  3. For each subkey, verify that the value data is "image." If the value is anything other than "image," follow these steps:
    1. Click the subkey and locate the entry PerceivedType.
    2. Right-click PerceivedType, and then click Modify.
    3. Type image in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
