Update installation instructions

To prepare Windows SBS to deploy Windows XP SP2 to client computers that are running Windows XP Professional, follow these steps on the Windows SBS-based computer:
  1. Download the 884032 update and Windows XP SP2. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. To download the 884032 software update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a8f72fdd-6d82-4c2b-8078-114460826a40&displaylang=en
    2. Click Download to start the download.
    3. When you are prompted to open or to save the file, click Save.
    4. Click Desktop as the location to save the file, and then click Save.
    5. When the download is completed, click Close.
    6. To download the Windows XP SP2 network installation package, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en
Note If you already have Windows XP SP2 on a CD, go to step 2.
    7. Repeat steps b through e for the Windows XP SP2 download. Make sure that you save the file to the desktop.
  2. Update the Windows SBS ClientApps5 folder with Windows XP SP2. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type cd %userprofile% \desktop, and then press ENTER.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      windowsxp-kb835935-sp2-enu.exe /x:Drive:\clientapps5\wxpsp2
Note Drive is the drive that contains the ClientApps5 folder.

Note If you are extracting the Windows XP SP2 files from a Windows XP SP2 CD, change to the drive of the Windows XP SP2 CD, and then type the following command:
      xpsp2.exe /x:Drive:\clientapps5\wxpsp2
The files are extracted to the Wxpsp2 folder in the ClientApps5 folder.

Important You must extract the files to the Wxpsp2 folder. If you do not use this name, the update procedure will not work.
    4. When the file extraction is completed, click OK.
  3. Install the 884032 update. To install the update, double-click the SBS2003-KB884032-X86-ENU.exe file on the desktop, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  4. Delete the Wxpsp1 folder in your ClientApps5 folder. The Wxpsp1 folder contains the Windows XP Service Pack 1 file bits. This is an optional step.

Caution Before you complete this step, test that you have successfully updated a client computer with Windows XP SP2. To do this, use the Windows SBS Client Setup feature. For more information about how to use the Client Setup feature, click Start, click Server Management, click Client Computers in the left pane, and then click More Information. On the Contents tab, click Configure client computers.

To delete the Wxpsp1 folder, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
      \\ServerName\clientapps5
Note ServerName is the name of the Windows SBS-based computer.
    2. Right-click the Wxpsp1 folder, and then click Delete.
    3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

MORE INFORMATION

The Client Setup feature will only deploy the service pack if the language setting of the operating system on the client computer is the same as the language setting of the operating system on the server.

When you deploy Windows XP SP2, you may have to restart each client computer two times to enable the Windows XP SP2 Security Center feature. For more information about Microsoft software updates, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
