After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), smart tags do not appear in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003.

This behavior occurs because Windows XP SP2 makes some security changes in Outlook 2003 that causes smart tags not to persist in Microsoft Outlook. This behavior does not occur when users install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).

To resolve this behavior, install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) after you install Windows XP SP2. Additionally, you must make the following changes to the registry.

| 1. | Click Start, click Run, type regedit, in the Open box, and then click OK. |
| 2. | Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security |
| 3. | On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key. |
| 4. | Type RenderedIEBehaviors, and then press ENTER. |
| 5. | On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. |
| 6. | Type #default#ieooui, and then press ENTER. |
| 7. | Double-click #default#ieooui, type 1 in the Value Data box, and then click OK. |
| 8. | Quit Registry Editor. |
