SYMPTOMS

When you run a custom program that programmatically saves changes to a document and then closes the document, and you use pen functions while the document is being saved in Microsoft Office Word 2003 on a Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC-based computer, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Word 2003 unexpectedly quits.
  • You receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

    Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to one of the following error signatures:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you repeatedly tap the pen while a custom program saves and closes a document.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

This problem is corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 1 Hotfix Package that is dated November 18, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the BlockDocCloseDuringCmdExec registry key and to activate the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word 2003.
  2. Tap Start, tap Run, type regedit, and then tap OK.
  3. Locate and then tap to select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options
  4. After you select the registry subkey that is specified in step 3, tap New on the Edit menu, and then tap DWORD Value.
  5. Type BlockDocCloseDuringCmdExec, and then press ENTER.
  6. Tap BlockDocCloseDuringCmdExec, and then tap Modify on the Edit menu.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then tap OK.
  8. On the File menu, tap Exit to quit Registry Editor.
