Event ID 1004 is logged when a thin client tries to obtain a license from a Windows Server 2003-based terminal server

SYMPTOMS

When a thin client device tries to obtain a Terminal Services license from a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based terminal server, the following Error event is logged in the Application log of the terminal server.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: TermService
Event ID: 1004
Description: The terminal server cannot issue a client license.

Note This Error event is logged even if the terminal server has permanent client licenses available.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
