INTRODUCTION

Issues that are fixed by this hotfix package

The following issue is fixed in this Microsoft SQL Server 2000 hotfix package:
  • When you run ad-hoc queries in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, ad-hoc query processing performance degradation occurs. When the performance degradation occurs, you may see that there are many system process IDs (SPID) in the sysprocesses table. Additionally, the lastwaittype column in the sysprocesses table has a CMEMTHREAD value.

Note This problem is more prevalent on computers that are running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 64-bit than on computers that are running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 32-bit. The problem occurs because of the larger buffer pool sizes available to the 64-bit architecture. To date, this problem has occurred on computers that have a procedure cache that is larger than 16 GB.

For a list of previous hotfixes, see the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Post-Service Pack 3 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
290211 How to obtain the latest SQL Server 2000 service pack

CAUSE

This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
  • A large percentage of the workload is submitted without using defined parameters from a front end application.
  • The procedure cache has grown very large. When the procedure cache grows very large, the memory allocation for new queries may become inefficient.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The dynamic memory management architecture in SQL Server lets the data pages and the procedure cache share the same buffer pool. Typically, this design works fine because the Lazywriter process naturally ages out buffers in the buffer pool that are not being reused frequently. However, with a high rate of incoming ad-hoc queries, it is possible for the procedure cache to grow very large relative to the data cache. The large procedure cache causes the performance problems on a computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 64-bit that were mentioned earlier.

The hotfix discussed in this article improves the efficiency of SQL Server's internal memory allocation process when the procedure cache grows very large.
