SYMPTOMS

When you try to put your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer on standby or in hibernation, the computer appears to change states, but then unexpectedly powers back up and starts Windows XP.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if a universal serial bus (USB) mass storage device that is connected to your computer uses an Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 2.
