SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 domain with your Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4-based computer, you may receive the following error message.
The system can not log you on due to the following error:
The system cannot find message text for message number 0x%1 in the message file for %2.

Please try again or consult your system administrator.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if your user account is configured with the Smart card is required for interactive logon setting and if you try to log on to the domain without a smart card. When this problem occurs, the Windows Server 2003 authentication component does not return the correct error message.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
