SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1), when you use virtual directories that are not configured as applications, you may receive view state error messages that are similar to the following:

The viewstate is invalid for this page and might be corrupted.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the template source directories on two computers do not match. For view state validation to work correctly, the source path for both computers must match.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
